Rich Englund shot a 74 to lead the Tigers to the Plainfield Central Invite team title.

North edges host Wildcats at invite

There were some fireworks at Mistwood Golf Club Wednesday, August 18 at the Plainfield Central Invite.
While Central sophomore Mitch Young shot a 73 to win medalist honors at the tournament, Plainfield North got the last laugh as a team with a three-shot victory over Central to win the 10-team Invite with a 314.
“This was our best score we have had as a team,” North coach Brad Shinovich said. “It’s a fantastic start to the season. You can tell how excited the guys are.”
Leading the Tigers were seniors Rich Englund and Nick Corban. Englund took third place with a 74, while Corban was fourth with a 76.
“It’s the best score pretty much of my life,” Englund said. “I was able to birdie most of the par-5s. I should have eagled a couple of them. I missed a couple eagle putts that were literally two feet. The drives were really nice for a change and the irons were going straight and far.”
“My irons weren’t that great, but I was hitting fairways,” Corban said. “I didn’t have many birdie opportunities, but was able to make some long par putts.”
Englund’s round has given himself plenty of hope for the season.
“I want to keep shooting low,” Englund stated. “Hopefully I can keep going and make sectionals as a senior. That would be a big bonus for me.”

Cichy, Hill form solid combo

With the returning Southwest Prairie Conference MVP and a freshman sensation, Plainfield South got its season off to a strong start.
The Cougars took second place at the Plainfield North Invite Tuesday, August 17 at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville with a 379. Hinsdale South won the tournament with a 373.
Leading the way for South and taking third individually was senior Sam Cichy, who is the reigning SPC MVP.
“I was really excited,” Cichy said. “I had shot an 89 over the summer and my score decreases almost every time I play, so I’m really excited. I have been at Wedgewood practicing at least once or twice a week over the summer. I’ve been really working hard since this is my last year. I want to put all the effort in.”
With the strong start to the season, Cichy has an eye on state after qualifying for sectionals last year.
“I’m definitely going for state,” Cichy said. “I believe I was eight shots away last year. So this year I definitely think I can make it. I really want our team to do well too and beat Minooka. I’m excited.”
Minooka has edged the Cougars for the conference title the past two years. South wants it back and Cichy wants to repeat as individual champ.
